Waste Management in Dowerin
Dowerin's tip is located a short distance out of town at the Amery Refuse Site which is manned by the Shire's Refuse Site Attendant, Wayne Webber. The refuse site opening hours are as follows:
Prior to 2008 the Amery Refuse Site was an open area accessible to the public 24 hours per day, 7 days per week with the primary purpose of a waste disposal site. This unlimited access resulted in the inappropriate dumping of waste and the misuse of the Shire Refuse Site which quickly became a messy eyesore on the edge of town. Over the past 12 months there was a notable change at the Amery Refuse Site when shire staff constructed a fence and secure gate at the entrance to the tip in order to restrict access to the site. We also welcomed Wayne to the team as refuse site attendant. The Shire Works Staff have also established a series of gravel barriers within the refuse site in order to deliniate specific areas for various types of waste. The newly constructed bunkers all display clear signage which identify what can be dumped where.
In creating designated bunkers the Shire of Dowerin aims to encourage recycling, reduce landfill and promote the appropriate dumping of waste.
