Budget

Shire President’s message

It is with great pleasure that I present the 2016/17 budget for the Shire of Dowerin which Council adopted on Tuesday 15 August 2017. Despite significant increases in costs and reductions in State Government Grant funding, my fellow Councillors and I have shown a strong commitment to keeping rates to a manageable level for our ratepayers.  The aggregate increase in rates revenue for 2017/18 is 3%; however as this was a revaluation year for GRV properties by the Valuer General’s Office (Landgate), there are likely to be some ratepayers who will experience a rate increase greater than 3% and others who will find their rates have decreased. Overall this year the Shire will receive $1,247, 570 in rates revenue.

Rates income along with approx. $3.166 million in grant funding and revenue from fees and charges and interest  earned will provide the Shire with just over $5.12 million.  With this your Council is able to deliver a solid capital works program consisting of essential road upgrades, the purchase of a new Grader, building a new fire services building, implement sustainability initiatives such as solar panels for the Shire office.  We will also continue to deliver services and maintain our essential community facilities.   We continue to strive towards achieving the Community’s vision to be “A thriving rural community which will be a lifestyle choice for generations, a preferred location for business development and a recognised leader in environmental management”.

In closing, I acknowledge my fellow Councillors and the Shire Staff for their efforts in delivering a budget that shows strong financial management and considers the needs and aspirations of current and future residents of our Community.
