Dowerin Community Club
The Dowerin Community Club Project is a result of more than ten years project development with an aim of co-locating all possible community sport and recreation facilities within the Dowerin town site.
In 2004 an independent review of Dowerin’s Sport and Recreational facilities concluded that the centralising club facilities and sporting infrastructure was essential to the continued provision of suitable facilities that promote, sustain and increase physical activity within the Shire of Dowerin. The development of the Dowerin Community Club aims to provide the local and wider community with inclusive access across all age groups, activities, physical capabilities and volunteer involvement to a centrally located, safe, secure and welcoming environment. The facility will be professionally managed by a Central Management Committee with the support of the Shire of Dowerin to ensure there is limited financial impact on users, whilst also ensuring the provision for ongoing maintenance and eventual refurbishment.
The Shire of Dowerin has been responsible for initiating, developing and managing this project to date which has involved the development of the Dowerin Recreation Strategy and Feasibility Study for the project, appointment of external consultants (feasibility study, architects, surveyors and builders) and a high level of community and club consultation (including community workshops, independent club meetings and the development of a community based steering committee to drive the concept of the Dowerin Community Club facility to a reality). The cooperation from each of the groups throughout the planning and consultation stages has resulted in a design of a facility that caters for the needs of each of these groups and an affordable yet effective community facility.
As an integral part of the Dowerin Community Club development, Shire Staff have liaised with corporate and government organisations in order to source funding to assist with the cost associated with the construction of this facility. Detailed grant applications have been submitted demonstrating the Shire of Dowerin’s strong ability to plan and implement a project which possess a workable and realistic budget, timeframe, lifecycle analysis, SWOT analysis and management structure. In 2010/2011 the Shire of Dowerin successfully obtained $2.1 million dollars in grant funding towards the development of this project. Funding providers include:
- Department of Sport and Recreation
- Lotterywest
- Department of Agriculture
- Royalties for Regions
The Dowerin Community Club construction stage is complete with Tennis Courts and Bowling Green to be completed by March 2013.
