We are pleased to share a special piece of local history!
The Shire of Dowerin has received official approval from Landgate to rename Dowall Street in Minnivale to McDowall Street, restoring the name originally intended to honour Private Stewart Arthur McDowall, a local First World War soldier.
Private McDowall enlisted in 1916 and served with the 16th Battalion of the Australian Imperial Force. Tragically, he was killed in action on 26 September 1917 during the Battle of Passchendaele in Belgium.
His grave was lost, but his sacrifice has never been forgotten. His name is commemorated at the Menin Gate Memorial in Belgium, the Dowerin War Memorial and the Minnivale Memorial within the historic Minnivale Church.
❤️ Preserving our local history
We would particularly like to acknowledge Di Hatwell and Joan Metcalf for their involvement in bringing this important piece of Minnivale's history to attention.
What may seem like a small correction to a street name carries a much greater meaning. It ensures that the story of a young man who gave his life for his country continues to be recognised by future generations.
The renaming was formally approved on 8 October 2026.
Thank you to everyone who has contributed to preserving our district's history and honouring those who served.
Lest We Forget. 🌹
