The Shire of Dowerin has welcomed a major State and Federal Government announcement that will see four new modular homes delivered in Dowerin, as part of a significant regional housing investment across the Wheatbelt.
The four new homes are planned for Anderson Street, Dowerin, through the Central East Accommodation and Care Alliance (CEACA), of which the Shire of Dowerin is a member.
The Dowerin homes form part of a broader project delivering 54 new modular homes across 17 Wheatbelt sites, supported by $16.96 million from the Western Australian Government and $10.24 million through the Australian Government’s Housing Australia Future Fund.
The project will increase the availability of accessible, fit-for-purpose housing for seniors across the Wheatbelt, supporting people to age in place while remaining connected to their families, friends and local communities.
Shire President Cr Darrel Hudson welcomed the announcement and said securing four additional homes was a significant outcome for Dowerin.
“Four new homes is a significant addition for a community of our size and represents a genuine investment in Dowerin’s future,” Cr Hudson said.
“Housing availability continues to be one of the major challenges facing regional communities. Increasing the range of suitable housing locally gives our residents greater opportunity to remain in Dowerin, close to their families, friends and the community they know.”
Shire CEO Manisha Barthakur said the announcement complemented Council’s broader commitment to increasing housing supply and supporting the long-term sustainability of Dowerin.
“This is about much more than four new houses. It is about creating appropriate housing choices, supporting ageing in place and strengthening the sustainability of our community,” Ms Barthakur said.
“Council has been actively pursuing opportunities to increase housing supply in Dowerin, and we are very pleased to see this partnership between CEACA, the State Government, Australian Government and participating Wheatbelt local governments delivering a tangible outcome for our community.”

The homes will be manufactured by Modular WA and constructed to Silver Liveable Housing Australia standards, providing accessible and practical accommodation designed to support older residents.
The broader project represents the largest single modular housing delivery of its kind by a community housing provider in Western Australia, demonstrating the potential of modular construction to deliver much-needed housing across regional communities.
Construction is expected to commence shortly, with installation across Wheatbelt communities to follow.
